well now I have ranted about my republicanism I am going to bore you with my holiday photos! Milan is a very busy city more London than Florence I think and so very hot!!
and the heat meant that I lost my appetite (a very rare thing) and could only photograph the wondrous food in the windows!!
I could also only photograph the wondrous things in the Prada window but for more financial reasons!
Oh the shoes!
Lots of beautiful art deco/nouveau (I looked it up on Google and am none the wiser!) balconies near where we were staying but Milan was heavily bombed during the war and a lot of the buildings in the centre are ugly modern business buildings.
the Duomo is spectacular! It is unbelievably ornate with stunning carvings
we even managed to find our very own mr posh paws the whippet
I love the creepy little figures hidden amongst fruit and flowers
and even more decoration
a glorious tram system that we loved using
the hip area down by the canals (hence my dear man's artsy cross processed photograph). Lots of nice music and food down there but VERY expensive drinks
the truth is we can't last in a city for more than a day and we did escape on the train to some water at the beautiful lake Como
where we enjoyed a lovely boat trip while picking out a nice little weekend retreat!
There is some fabulous art in Milan, in particular I enjoyed the Pinocateca Ambrosiana which houses Leonardo da Vinci's codex ( lots of sketches and notes) and had a beautiful Bruegel show on. We sadly didn't get to see the Last Supper as you need to book months in advance.
I love my children dearly but it was rather nice to spend four days without having to cook clean wash up pick up.... and they coped magnificently, we even came back to a clean house. I should point out that my oldest is eighteen just in case you thought we had left them 'home alone'!! Of course I spent the whole holiday thinking 'oh Annis/Teague/Cain would have loved this' but I buried the guilt and enjoyed it, our first holiday alone in 19 years!
sounds like you had a great time!! I am going to be home alone next week and can't wait...my other half and son are off to Magaluf on a stag do!!! Bring on the no cooking.....
ReplyDeleteNo cooking, only picking up after yourself!! take aways, no washing up, quiet. I'd rather be you than in Magaluf!!
DeleteWhat beautiful photos, it looks wonderful! Love the Prada window display and all the ornate carvings you found. Lake Como does look beautiful too. I understand what you mean about getting away just your two selves for a while, I think it's really important to do that now and again xx
ReplyDeleteIt was very lovely, I think it's made us realise that even if it's only for a day we all need a bit of time away from our children, it helps recharge batteries and look at things more objectively! and then we can come home and be perfect parents;o)!! x
DeleteBeautiful photos!!! I want some of that hot weather right now. It's freezing here in Germany! Doesnt the yellow house at Lake Como belong to George Clooney? Glad you enjoyed yourself!
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely, I don't think that one is George Clooney's although he does have a house there but on the main part of the lake. I would definitely like a bit of warm weather right now too!! x
DeleteHow lovely, to enjoy time together without children - and in such stunning surroundings, too! Thanks for sharing xx
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to spend some time together, we were very lucky! x

ReplyDeleteI like the cross processes pics, I may have to get him to take all my pictures for me from now on as I can't use his camera!! Too many settings! I was all rearing to go when I got home but this weather has made me want to hibernate with a good book! x
